About our guest: Ellen Hogan, M.A., is an accessibility advocate focused on organizational leadership and change. She recently joined Colorado Department of Education's (CDE) Adult Education Initiatives team, serving as the Instructional Support and Professional Learning Coordinator. The AEI team is responsible for overseeing the Adult Education Family Literacy Act (federal) and the Adult Education Literacy Act (state) grants.
 
Ellen provides proactive and responsive support for institutions and organizations to enhance inclusivity and accessibility for all. Ellen has extensive experience collaborating with community leaders, staff, faculty, administrators, UX designers and other partners to dismantle barriers that prohibit access to education. Prior to her current role, Ellen has worked as a Faculty Developer at DU's Office of Teaching and Learning, an Accommodations Specialist at DU's Disability Services Program, and as a public special education teacher and case manager for students in 6th-12th grade.


Mountain Plains Adult Education Association 2024 Conference Presentation
Presented on work with Dr. Jessica Alzen, who is a Senior Research Associate at the Center for Assessment, Design, Research and Evaluation at the University of Colorado, Boulder, on the Strengths and Needs of In-House PD Assessment in Adult Education. The session included sharing strategies about similarities across state lines including options for synchronous, asynchronous, virtual, and in-person events for adult education professionals. Through intentional dialogue, we engaged in critical problem-solving of how we can respond to shared challenges and find solutions across the field.

2024 Annual Conference Presentation
Presented with Dr. Leslie Cramblet-Alvarez, who is the Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning at the University of Denver, on work with the Neurodiversity Institute at the Association of American Colleges and Universities 2024 Annual Conference. The title of the session "Opening Hearts and Minds: Cultivating a Culture of Support for Neurodiverse Students" included sharing our strategies while helping others shape them to meet the needs of their campus and neurodiverse students. Through open dialogue and exchange of ideas, we explored practical strategies and discussed the transformative potential of faculty-driven change initiatives in creating innovative, inclusive, and equitable learning environments for all students.

Neurodiversity Institute

Through cross-campus collaboration, the Neurodiversity Institute facilitates an environment conducive to understanding and supporting the needs of neurodivergent students. We prioritize initiatives that emphasize the significance of maintaining high-quality content control, proactively ensuring digital accessibility, and upholding ADA compliance standards. Our efforts create a platform for robust discussions and effective problem-solving, fostering inclusivity and accessibility across our academic community.
EDUCAUSE 2022 Presentation and Podcast

Developed a comprehensive 5-Star Accessibility Review Rating scale for evaluating the accessibility of third-party Educational Technologies. This rubric is meticulously crafted based on WCAG 2.2 guidelines and Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) reviews, ensuring a thorough assessment process. Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)

Collaborates with a cross-divisional team of colleagues to host the annual GAAD celebration at the University of Denver. The mission is dedicated to proactively enhancing awareness and acceptance of digital accessibility initiatives. Facilitates a student, staff, and faculty panel where lived experiences are shared, and digital accessibility barriers are discussed.
National Federation for the Blind Presentation

Presented at the National Federation for the Blind Annual Convention 2021 on behalf of the Colorado Association of Blind Students (CABS) regarding digital accessibility, transitioning to college, and the difference between ADA accommodations in the K-12 and higher education environments.
